Taming Mosquitoes, Flies, Ants, and More This Summer

Insects around the home can be a troubling problem for many homeowners – especially in the summer. Mosquitoes, in particular, can lurk in your home and bite when you least expect it. Ants are also unfortunate pests that can get in your food and other areas of your home. To keep your home comfortable and prevent unwanted insect bites, follow these tips!

Keep Your Home and Yard Dry

Many insects breed in moist areas of a yard or garage. Mosquitoes can reproduce quickly if there is any excess water around your home. They have been known to lay eggs in trashcans, gutters, and even swimming pools. You can control the breeding of these insects by keeping your home dry. Here are some suggestions to try:

  • Clean your gutters
  • Poke holes in your trashcan so water evaporates easily
  • Cover your swimming pool
  • Do not over water your lawn

Put Out Traps

Sometimes it can be difficult to get rid of mosquitoes, ants, and flies because they are hard to find. Even if you kill one, there is likely to be more of them. Fortunately, there are several traps you can place around your home that will help you control these pests. A UV light trap is a great option to control mosquitoes. When mosquitoes fly onto this sticky trap, they will not be able to escape. To catch flies, you can make flypaper strips. Simply apply a mixture of corn syrup and sugar on brown paper. Then, hang these strips around your home or backyard. To get rid of ants, you may want to put out ant baits where you see ants appearing in your home. The ants will eat the poison in these baits and bring it back to the colony where more ants are reside.

Use Repellents

When you are in an environment where insects are likely to be present, use a repellent to keep them away from you! You can spray repellent on your body to shield off mosquitoes and other pests. Whether you’re spending time by the pool or on a camping trip, bug repellent will keep the pesky pests away.

If you have an insect problem, make sure to keep your doors and windows closed tightly. Also, inspect the points of entry to your home. These pests may be entering your home from areas you are not aware of and a simple repair could resolve a lot of your pest problems.
